BDSM activities take in a very wide range of interests and tastes, from erotic through to extreme pain and suffering. You can ask yourself why; there are hundreds of websites dedicated to the why but this site is mostly about the how and the what. Sometimes it's pointless asking what makes people want to or consent to activities involving burning, branding, piercing, blood and agony. Yet those who want or need it, want and need it. That's it. There is little or no point in probing deeply into why that should be when it's clear to all concerned that it's something they just have to do. It's not about simply withstanding pain, it's about fulfilling urges that run so deep that the motivation and reasons for them live deep down in the core, so deep that light may never reach them.

A surprisingly large number of subs are also into moderate to severe pain. If you have worked hard and scoured the web then most likely you will have found some of the famous images of breast piercing with skewers, severe vaginal piercing, hard whipping, burning, needle play, fisting and other forms of torture. Subs who are into pain will typically tell you that once their torment starts they enter "sub space" where normal forms of perception of the senses are suspended and the effects of pain are radically different from what ordinary people feel. From the Dom's point of view, you find it exciting and erotic to apply skilful torture. But it is absolutely crucial that everyone involved chooses to become involved and that very careful limits are set. Any fool can cause severe pain and tissue trauma. The skilful bit is to do it in such a way that its erotic or sensual potential is released to the satisfaction of the Dom and the sub - or perhaps more accurately, the Sadist and the Masochist.

People who are into sensual pain do not find it easy to obtain suitable partners. The Masochist is placing a huge degree of trust in his or her choice of Master/Sadist because the potential for error or accident is so large. Anyone wanting to get involved in serious torture play cannot simply expect to be invited by the first potential partner they meet. Anyone who does offer an invitation like that is probably a problem waiting to happen. Serious players know the risks and work to minimise them.

If you are just a "tourist" with a passing interest in torture, think again. You would be better to gain some experience in spanking and caning, the lighter forms of sensual pain, before you try anything remotely close to the intensity that occurs in more serious sessions.
